The impressive ruins Furness Abbey are situated just outside the town of Barrow-in-Furness. Built in 1123 the abbey is constructed entirely from red sandstone and was once a Cistercian monastery.

Furness Abbey is said to be very haunted and there are three main ghost which are said to have bee sighted on numerous occasions. A monk who was murdered during the Reformation is often sighted climbing one of the staircases in the Abbey and other sightings include that of a squire daughter and her truelove and a headless monk on horseback.

Much of the abbey remains including parts of the east and west towers and the site is managed by English Heritage who are undertaking restoration works to prevent the abbey from sinking into the soft ground.
